By Lisa Vernon-Sparks The police have not identified the three people riding in a black Jaguar that slammed into a chain-link fence on Niantic Avenue, killing the driver late Thursday evening. The driver, who the police believe is a man, was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital, Cranston Police Maj. Ronald Blackmar said today. The accident happened Thanksgiving night, shortly after 10 p.m. off the Niantic Avenue exit on Route 10 north in Providence, at the Cranston border. Blackmar would not release the names of two passengers riding in Jaguar until the police notify their families. He said one person was in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital, but did not give the condition of the other. Blackmar said he believed all three people were men, but said he wasn't sure. The police say the vehicle had a temporary license plate. It's not clear if there were any driver's licenses available to check the occupants' identities. "We don't have identification yet," Blackmar said. "We don't know who the driver is yet. We have an idea who the other two are." The Jaguar, which police believe had been traveling north on Route 10, skidded over a grass median just off the exit ramp. It plowed through a chain-link fence and into the entrance way of Corp Brothers Inc., at 88 Niantic Ave. that distributes industrial equipment, welding and specialty gas supplies. |
