PROVIDENCE -- Short of food donations for its holiday baskets, the Salvation Army has extended its food collection through tomorrow. Today was supposed to be the final distribution day, Major Debbie Burr said. Today's tally, however, showed the Salvation Army was about 500 baskets short of its 3,000 goal. "It's a bad time, no doubt, for everyone," Burr said. Donations are "Just not keeping up (with) the rise in the need this year." Burr said 3,000 needy families had applied last month to receive a basket, which includes $15- to $20-worth of Thanksgiving staples and a turkey voucher. If you want to contribute, drop by your local Shaw's Supermarket. |
