NEWPORT -- A new leader will take the helm at the Naval War College in Newport. Rear Admiral James Wisecup will be sworn in during a change of command ceremony Thursday. He will replace Rear Admiral Jacob Shuford, who assumed command in 2004 as the college's 51st president. College officials credited Shuford with expanding programs at the school, restructuring curriculum and reaching out to other naval institutions around the world. Wisecup last commanded the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group, which includes the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier and several supporting vessels. A Naval War College spokeswoman said the group of ships is deployed in the Western Pacific and includes more than 7,000 sailors. -- The Associated Press |
