PROVIDENCE -- Emmy Award- and Golden Globe-winning actress Mariska Hargitay will speak tomorrow at a luncheon celebrating the local Day One's 35th anniversary. The organization that began in 1973 as the Rhode Island Rape Crisis Center still has tickets available for anyone hoping to hear the actress, who plays NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit Det. Olivia Benson. Tickets for the noon luncheon at the Westin Hotel are $125. Also, for $500, people can meet Hargitay and have their picture taken with her at a half-hour reception prior to the luncheon. However, those tickets are limited and anyone wishing to attend that reception should act quickly, according to spokeswoman Beth Bailey. Day One reports that a sexual assault occurs every 90 seconds in the United States -- and most of those crimes are committed by someone the victim knows. Last year in Rhode Island, the agency reports that 605 sexual offenses were reported to police departments. For its fundraising luncheon, the agency has turned to an actress with a history of working with rape-crisis and support centers. Hargitay's character on the popular NBC drama investigates sexual assaults and related crimes. In real life, among her other philanthropic work, the actress founded the Joyful Heart Foundation in 2004 to help survivors of sexual assault "heal their minds, bodies and spirits and reclaim their lives." On the organization's Web site, Hargitay is quoted as saying: "When people are abused and assaulted, it is like the doors to their souls slam shut. The goal of Joyful Heart is to let the light, and the life, back in -- to banish the darkness and let the healing begin." |
