U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, the Democratic incumbent, has gained an early lead over Republican challenger Robert G. Tingle in the U.S. Senate election, according to unofficial returns from the state Board of Elections. With 51 precincts reporting, Reed has 20,484 votes and Tingle has 8,346 votes.
