PROVIDENCE -- Governor Carcieri this morning admitted to his fourth violation of the state Ethics Code, agreeing to pay a $2,500 fine in connection with his hiring of his niece in 2003.

The niece, Stephanie Accaputo, had worked on Carcieri's successful 2002 campaign for his first term as governor. Carcieri hired her for a job in his Office of Constituent Affairs in the Office of the Governor.

She quit Friday, the governor's office said.

Carcieri released a statement saying that "the governor did not intend to violate the Code of Ethics" but admitting that he did so after the commission "clarified" the code's nepotism provisions in 2007.

Maybe the governor should resign just as his niece did. That would be the fair thing to do. Why should only one person lose their job over this when the governor admits to an Ethics Code violation and this isn't even the first, but the fourth. I think he should resign.

anybody who works for the state only got their jobs for one of these few reasons.they have a family member employed with the state.they have a political friend who works for the state.they have a boyfriend or girlfriend who works for the state.they have a friend in the unions which run this state.no one gets a job in this state based on their own merits.the governors niece should have been allowed to keep her job.but because she is gone senator montalbano son and all members of senator mcburneys family on the state payroll should resign.i would fire everyone in this state and start to rehire immediately.lets get some honesty back into this state.its no wonder no business will come here.

Like they say,"only in Rhode Island". After violating the state ethic code 4 times the court penalizes him $2500. What a lesson! That fine is just spare change to him so next time and there after he may have his pocket change ready when caught so to avoid court.

A note to bill, who posted at 2:59:

Whether you want to believe it or not, I'm a state employee and am not related to any state employees, have no political friends whatsoever, and don't know anyone in the unions (and have a non-union state job anyway).

I got my job based solely on my own resume, not someone else's.

We, the non-affiliated, are out here, working for you.

Carcieri always states he is going to clean up the state of RI. Meanwhile, he is on his 4th ethics violation. For such a "smart" man, he was unaware that a niece in law, is in fact, a "relative by marriage." Why is he allowed to repeatedly break the law, and has no repercussions for it (except for a small fine, which means nothing to him?) I only hear about the corruption of the Democrats in this state, but from where I sit - this man is one of the most dishonest men around. His numbers never add up - he fires people or lays them off, or forces retirement to save money, and then ends up paying overtime to other people to do the same job. He needs to go - NOW!!!! AND, I am not a state employee, an illegal alien, or a poor person utilizing services in this state. I am a disgusted TAXPAYER!

Another 'whether you believe it or not' comment. I was hired into state service 30 years ago, and without knowing anyone in state service at all. No political connections of any kind - no relatives, no friends, no aquaintances, no favors. Just another person signing on to a temporary available state job through the state job bank - a job which became permanent over time.

It's so annoying to the many of us who have worked hard for so many years, for somewhat modest salaries, to have to constantly hear criticisms about huge salaries (maybe for the governor's consultants) and political 'connections. Not so in my case and many others I know of. And also, most of us who attained managerial status lost our union memberships. I worked the last 20 years of so with no union representation. So where are all the perks? So much for the 'connections' myth.

Well now "Don", you did not think for a minute that we rhode island taxpayers would forget that your relative's salary should also have to be paid back to we taxpayers for unauthorized hiring and employment. We do not care who's pocket these monies be paid back to we the general public of rhode island.

Can't wait to see how this Governor is remembered in the history books later after he is gone. Last election does anyone remember "Don" informing us of the sad state we were in as taxpayers, he did a "great job" over his first term, oh that's right he said its not his fault. That is his answer for everything he is questioned(caught)about, just like these ethic violations. His girl Amy said he would not talk about this anymore its over and he is moving on, can't wait to see what he's moving on to next. OH and I think he owes Bill Rappeley from Channel 10-I'm sorry you were right-if he's man enough.

People, remember that the ills of the state are not the fault of Governor Carcieri. The esteemed Democratic buffoons in the legislature either precipitated the problems or turned a blind eye to them. Two of the big problems were solved when the voters turned out Sen. Alves and Sen. Montalbano. There are many more and until they are given their walking papers, we will continue to be a state in trouble.
