The state Department of Transportation tonight will begin demolishing the center pier of the old Route 403 Bridge at Exit 7A over Route 4 in East Greenwich.

The work will start at 8 p.m. The same equipment used to remove the bridge's deck will be used to remove the solid cement and steel rebar structures.

The DOT "hopes to have the pier as well as the two bridge abutments down within the next few days," the DOT director, Michael P. Lewis, stated.

Night work is done to limit traffic delays and for safety of drivers and construction workers, the DOT said. The DOT said that noise levels will be monitored throughout work.

Detours will be in place starting at 8 p.m. for drivers using Route 4 north and south in the project's vicinity. The signed detour uses Route 2 (South County Trail).

The road will reopen and all work will be done by 5 a.m.
