A Providence man was indicted today on the charge of murder in the death of his mother, 79-year-old Zulmira Medeiros, last year.

A Providence County grand jury handed up the indictment naming Luis Medeiros, 48, of 29 East Transit St. on one count of murder, according to a news release from Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch's office.

Luis Medeiros is accused of murdering Zulmira Medeiros on or about Aug. 3, 2007, in Providence. He is slated for Providence County Superior Court arraignment on Dec. 11.

The Journal reported last year that, before Zulmira Medeiros died, she accused her son, who has a lengthy criminal record.

"I was coming out of the bathroom and he (my son) kicked me in the stomach," Medeiros said in a statement to the police. "I grab the phone to call for help. My son push me and I fell down the stairs. I went to the street and called 911 for help."

The Journal report said at the time that Medeiros was charged with domestic assault with a dangerous weapon, his foot; domestic assault of a person over the age of 60, with serious bodily injury resulting; and, violation of a no-contact order.

Medeiros was under court order not to contact his mother, but, The Journal reported, he had been sharing her apartment at 29 East Transit St. in Fox Point, according to the police.
