NEWPORT -- A Portsmouth youth charged in the theft of a police officer's weapon and other gear is due back in court today on a previous charge. Kyle Atkinson, 18, of 208 Water St., faces charges today in a misdemeanor larceny case that had been filed in March. Atkinson had entered a no contest plea and agreed to pay restitution and court costs. That charge had been set aside for a year, meaning that it could be dismissed and Atkinson's record remain clear if he stayed out of trouble during that period. Atkinson was arrested Saturday along with four other youths in connection to the theft of a Little Compton police officer's gear last week. He was charged with receiving a stolen firearm, conspiracy to steal a firearm, and a felony count of receiving stolen goods. Bail was set yesterday at $10,000 in Newport's District Court. Also charged were Kristen Shaw, 18, of 59 Arrowhead Lane, and two boys, ages 17 and 15, whose names were not released due to their ages. The 17-year-old is to be arraigned tomorrow in Newport's family court on two charges of conspiracy to commit larceny, one a felony and another a misdemeanor. Shaw was charged with obstructing a police officer and conspiracy to commit larceny under $500, both misdemeanors. She's due back in court on Nov. 6. The 15-year-old was arraigned yesterday on felony charges of larceny of a firearm and conspiracy to commit larceny of a firearm, larceny over $500 (from other items stolen) and a misdemeanor charge of receiving stolen goods under $500. The weapon and other equipment were stolen from the pickup truck of an off-duty Little Compton police officer. The officer had placed a backpack containing his gear in his unlocked pickup truck, parked in his driveway, as he prepared to head to work.
The police said all items but a personal credit card issued to the Little Compton police officer have been recovered. The gun was found at Atkinson's home address, according to the police. The officer, whom police have not identified, was placed on administrative duty pending the results of an investigation on whether his actions violated department policies.
