North Smithfield High School was evacuated and a student was arrested this afternoon after school officials emptied the school because of a bomb threat. There was no bomb.

The threat was made between 1 and 1:30 p.m., Supt. Stephen Lindberg said. The school went into lockdown and students were sent home as end-of-the-day school buses arrived on the scene. The school was searched and cleared for reuse.

Police and fire officials as well as the state bomb squad were contacted and Lindberg said the situation was handled as called for in the town's safety protocols.

"It went the way it should have went," Lindberg said.

The juvenile who made the threat was a student at the school and was not identified because of his age. Lindberg also declined to provide specifics about how the threat was made.
