In Exeter, if the storm had waited a week, it could have come during the statewide shelter drill set for next Saturday. Exeter will be running that drill as a tabletop exercise in which firefighters, rescue and public works personnel focus identify who might need shelter, such as the mobile home parks at Split Rock on Route 2 and Barber's Trailer Park at Route 102 and Interstate 95 -- and who might need help getting out of their homes -- the town's two mobile home parks and people who are elderly, disabled or have special needs. EMA director Scott G. Kettelle advised residents to check culverts near their homes and clear them of debris. At Boone Lake, the neighborhood association had been alerted by the state and was draining off water Friday so the dam would not be overwhelmed during the storm. Sandbags were placed Friday at two homes downstream from Boone Lake, Council Vice President Robert E. Johnson Jr. said Friday. Payloaders and road graders were positioned in the center of town, he said, and response vehicles were loaded with chainsaws. "Historically the people in Exeter fend for themselves," Kettelle said Friday, but if shelter is needed, the Metcalf School is equipped with an emergency generator and can be opened. |
