In Newport, "We're just monitoring the storm right now," said Police Chief Michael McKenna, emergency management director for the City by the Sea. He said the harbormaster was warning boat owners of the impending storm and requesting that they double anchor, if possible, to prevent drifting in strong winds. The harbormaster, he said, was less worried about the forecast southeast winds than he would be if they were to come out of the northwest to which the harbor is more vulnerable. "At this point, we are confident the water level in the reservoirs is low so we don't anticipate flooding problems," he said. The city departments, he said, verified that key personnel will be in town this weekend to respond if needed. Fire Chief Harry Hallgring said the 22-foot rigid hull inflatable fire boat would remain in the water at Perrotti Park on Newport Harbor in the event it is needed. -- Journal staff writer Rich Salit |
