Readying for Hanna's potential hit to eastern New England, National Grid has alerted electric and natural gas employees about potential need for extended weekend work and has prepared notifications to special needs and critical care customers.

A National Grid news release says the company is monitoring Hanna's progress around the clock. Check in with the company's "storm central" Web site section.

The company is also:

* Preparing restoration equipment and inventories.

* Putting crews on notice for availability through the weekend and perhaps longer.

* Coordinating efforts with state and local emergency management organizations.

National Grid also lists tips aimed at reducing inconvenience and ensuring safety if power failures happen.

* Have a number of working flashlights, at least one battery-operated radio and an extra supply of batteries in your home.

* A radio is a good way to stay in touch, as National Grid provides media with information about service restoration efforts.

* Post National Grid's emergency outage reporting number (800) 465-1212 near your telephone so it will be handy.

* If you lose power, turn off any appliances that were on when the power went off, but leave one light on so you will know when power is restored.

* Never touch downed power lines. If you see one, report it to National Grid or the local emergency response organization.

* If you use a generator to supply power during an failure, only run it outdoors.

* Before running generators, make sure to disconnect from National Grid's system by shutting off the main breaker located in the electric service panel.

* Power problems sometimes interrupt water supply systems or disable well pumps, so keep a bottled drinking water supply handy, as well as some canned food.

National Grid said that people who depend on electric-powered life support equipment, such as a respirator, should let the company know. To register as a National Grid life support customer, call the company's Customer Service Contact Center at (800) 322-3223.

When power fails, some phones linked to a local phone line need electricity to run. If you would like to register another phone number, such as a cell phone, as your account's primary phone number, go to www.nationalgridus.com/myaccount and update information so that National Grid can call with information during a power failure.

After the storm, if your home is without power, call National Grid at (800) 465-1212.
