The state Health Department today issued a swimming advisory because of high rainfall that could arrive this weekend. The department's news release said people should not swim in areas within 200 feet of a running storm drain. The waters may contain high levels of harmful bacteria that can cause illness. The department discourages swimming and other full body contact activities at upper bay beaches after 2 or more inches of rain. The waters are affected by pollution due to heavy rains and discharges from area wastewater treatment facilities. Water contact should be avoided for a minimum of three days after heavy rainfall, the department said. |
