| Storm watch: Newport tells boat owners to double anchor »
In the island community of Jamestown, extra police officers are planned and highway employees on standby to clear trees or debris from the roads, if needed, during this weekend's storm, said Police Chief Thomas Tighe. Town Manager Bruce Keiser urged people not to go out and watch the storm at its peak, noting that in the last major storm to hit the area, some people attempted to drive across the road at Mackerel Cove, only to have their cars stall. Tighe said the town's emergency shelter, which is the Melrose Avenue School, is ready but he doubted it would be needed unless the weather forecasts change. -- Journal staff writer Randal Edgar |
