Storm watch: Before an exercise, practice in Seekonk

Ironically, Seekonk, Mass., already has a mock "tabletop" emergency exercise planned for this Wednesday and it will focus on handling a Katrina-level hurricane. Town Administrator Michael J. Carroll said this weekend's storm will provide real practice in responding to a storm, albeit one with far less danger.

Seekonk public safety officials were busy today checking fire and police vehicles, radios, chainsaws, tree chippers and the Peck Street public safety complex's backup generator, said Alan R. Jack, the town's fire chief and emergency management director. Jack said Seekonk is prepared, but is hopeful that the town will be spared the brunt of the storm.

"We're hoping for a low-level storm," Jack said earlier this afternoon. He urged residents to be "vigilant" and to take common sense precautions, such as securing patio furniture and umbrellas. Jack said residents should be especially cautious when using candles in the event of a power outage.
