A Rhode Island-based organization has awarded a New York Times reporting team $75,000 for its reporting on pollution in China.

The Grantham Prize is administered by the University of Rhode Island's Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting.

The prize, awarded annually, is meant to encourage "outstanding coverage of the environment, to recognize reporting that has the potential to constructive change, and to broadly disseminate the Prize-winning story to increase public awareness and understanding of issues focusing on the environment."

The Times team -- David Barboza, Keith Bradsher, Howard French, Joseph Kahn, Chang W. Lee, Jimmy Wang, and Jim Yardley -- wrote a 10-part series, complemented by an online feature, is called "Choking on Growth."

The prize is funded by Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham. Jeremy Grantham is an investment strategist based in Boston. Hannelore Grantham is director of The Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, which supports conservation programs around the world.

Three Awards of Merit, along with a $5,000 prize, were also awarded: one to Dinah Voyles Pulver at the Daytona Beach News Journal for her series on threatened ecologies in Florida.

Alison Richards and David Malakoff of National Public Radio were recognized for their series Climate Connections, a year-long series that documents the relationships between humans and climate.

Photographer and writer Ed Struzik won for his series documenting the effects of climate change in the Arctic.
