CUMBERLAND -- Graffiti found in North Cumberland Middle School this morning spurred a request for a state bomb squad search and has cancelled all afternoon and evening activities at the school, the school district said this afternoon. The graffiti, described as suspicious in a news release, was identified in the building at about 11:40 a.m. The principal contacted police and the school district administration. Working with the police, a team did a risk assessment and recommended evacuating the building at about 1:30 p.m., during sixth period. Students were dismissed "uneventfully" at the regular end of the school day from an unidentified evacuation site, the statement says. The bomb squad and a division of the state Fire Marshal's Office were asked to make a search of the school after students were dismissed. The building has been deemed safe for occupancy, the school district said. The Cumberland police are investigating. |
