PROVIDENCE -- Triumphal sounds of 20th Century composer Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" greeted John Maeda, the new leader of the Rhode Island School of Design whose presidency is being inaugurated at the renowned art school late today. With his inauguration, Maeda, 42, a graphic designer, artist and computer scientist, At today's ceremony, Maeda was welcomed and offered praise by RISD Board of Trustees chairwoman Merrill Sherman, who is chief executive of Bank Rhode Island. Sister Anne Keefe of St. Michael's Church in Providence gave the convocation. More people, including Maeda, are slated to speak. -- With reports from Joural arts writer Bill Van Siclen |
