PROVIDENCE -- Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee this morning stood by his comments that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is a "cocky whacko" and "dangerous for the country." Chafee, a former Republican turned independent, did not back down when reporters questioned him across from Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies, where he is a visiting fellow. Asked if he stood by his comments about the Alaska governor, Chafee said, "Absolutely, absolutely." Video: Former Sen. Lincoln Chafee says his remarks were strong because he feels strongly about the presidential election Audio: Hear Chafee talk about why he said what he said Palin, the governor of Alaska, has proven a popular pick with conservative Republicans. But Chafee questioned Palin's credentials and temperament Tuesday while addressing the New America Foundation, a Washington, D.C., public policy institute. Chafee, who is backing Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, said today that he hadn't gone into the lecture planning on calling Palin a "cocky whacko." It was "just an honest response to a question." Asked how Obama and his campaign view Chafee's description, Gannet Tseggai, the Obama campaign's northeast communications director, responded by e-mail today that the comments about Palin "do not reflect the views of Senator Obama, Senator Biden or our campaign." But, Tseggai said, Chafee "will continue to campaign for us because he can effectively make the case that Obama has what it takes to bring Democrats and Republicans together to get things done in Washington, D.C." The only Republican in the Senate to vote against giving President Bush the authority to attack Iraq, Chafee was visiting the Providence foundation to discuss his book, "Against The Tide: How a Compliant Congress Empowered a Reckless President." During a question-and-answer period, Chafee made the remarks about Palin during a question-and-answer perod and suggested that the Alaska governor's nomination might have energized the wrong party as far as the Republicans are concerned. After Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain announced that Palin was his pick, Chafee said he received a lot of e-mails and calls to his office at Brown University from people who said they were donating to the Obama campaign. Chafee's videotaped comments were uploaded to YouTube and are available below. In an interview with the foundation's Steven Clemons, Chafee said, "I do think she's dangerous for the country." Chafee said that Palin doesn't have the experience or temperament necessary for the job. He said her "aggressive, belligerent" approach is wrong for foreign policy. His comments on Palin start about 5:27 minutes into this clip: -- With reports from projo.com staff writer Brandie Jefferson CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. thank you to lincoln chafee for being the only republican in politics left who is honest about anything.

Hey Linc, first, quit pandering to the left. You have completely lost my respect as a 'politician'. Secondly, love or hate Sarah Palin, at least she sticks by her beliefs. That is more than I can say about you, you're a fraud!
"Honest about anything"? Anything "you believe" is more like it, however left-leaning. Linc Chaffee has the brains and character of a tse-tse fly, and I apologize to all the tse-tse flies out there for the comparison. Let's see if Mr.Perry will publish my criticism of Chaffee, or will he deem it mean spirited, unlike Mr. Chaffee's mean spirited, ad hominem attack on Ms. Palin calling her a cocky whacko. No hypocrisy at the Projo. Ever....

I am struck by the honesty of the statement, and the integrity to stand by that remark. My "Chafee for President" campaign begins today!

A "cocky whacko" ... this is the level of informed debate offered by the left?

Name calling again. Real professional Lincoln.

Greg: Exactly. Thank you for saying it succinctly.

I can't always say that Mr. Chafee is right but he hit the nail on the head with this one. He could have phrased his comment better but said what many of us have been thinking. The last thing we need is more Republican BS with policies only for the rich ond overly opinionated.

An example of Palin's whacko policies -

By George Bryson | Anchorage Daily News
"Former Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles broke new ground while answering a reporter's question on whether Wasilla forced rape victims to pay for their own forensic tests when Palin was mayor.
True, Knowles said.
Eight years ago, complaints about charging rape victims for medical exams [necessary to collect evidence] in Wasilla prompted the Alaska Legislature to pass a bill -- signed into law by Knowles -- that banned the practice statewide.
"There was one town in Alaska that was charging victims for this, and that was Wasilla," Knowles said."

I agree with Linc. I have been voting GOP for 30 years and will have no part in this pathetic candidate and her Reality Show. Dems are the only ones speaking anything close to the truth these days. Sad.

Linc Chaffee has confirmed my fears. He is a blue-blooded wacko doing time at Brown University. I was disappointed when he lost his relection bid for Senate, but now I am relieved that he was removed from office. He is an unsophisticated, out of touch with reality and was THE wrong choice to follow in Senator John Chaffee's footsteps. He is not the voice of the people of RI, he is the voice of an angry, spoiled, insolent little man who was born into fortunate circumstances.

There was a time not all that long ago when a United States Senator (former or not) would not have called a state Governor a "cocky whacko." Lincoln Chafee has brought shame upon himself for using such demeaning language to descibe a woman who doesn't agree with his view of the world. Name calling is what little boys and girls do. We don't need a third grader as a U.S. Senator. Oh right, we made that wise decision two years ago.

Hey chaffee there is a reason why you are no longer in office.... poor decisions left and right... learn to shut your mouth before you say something stupid.

I believe Lincoln Chafee used his low-class label for Sarah Palin because he is frustrated and in denial that his candidate has been exposed as dangerous for America, while Palin has been embraced by the people as an example of what most Americans respect. Of all 50 governors, she has the highest approval rating in her home state -- 80%. He questions her character; I see it as a strength in civic leadership. Chafee talks about integrity and honesty, but his candidate is lacking in both -- just examine Obama's voting record and his wandering explanations for his various positions (or for voting "present" so much). Furthermore, Obama has the most radical record on unlimited abortions, and that does not sit well with thinking people today who know what goes on in the womb before birth. Obama would not even protect babies born alive during botched abortions -- four times he voted against protecting these living babies! Palin has the moral high ground and Chafee doesn't get it.

For a change the "missing Linc" has hit the nail on the head. She is very unstable and changes direction like a weathervane in a Noreaster! I respect John McCain for what he has done for us, but to have her a heartbeat away from running the country? Boy for someone who supports Mom's, I guess she was not thinking of that when charging women for rape tests when she was mayor. Now she is trying to squash the pursuit of the charges she tried to get her brother-in-law fired. When his boss wouldn't do it, she fired him! Sounds like something like Nixon in Watergate!

I can't wait to vote in Chafee as our next Governor! Bite me Dan Yorke!

Chafee must be relieved that he was not re-elected. Now that he is persona non grata on the political scene, he can sit back and make powerless, pitiful remarks just like the rest of us bozos on the bus.
Yeahah!! Someone finally went on the record with what everyone else has been thinking. Between her and her female supporters who provide the same rhetorical commentary to the news shows I believe all the Republicans are unable to tell the truth.
Thanks Linc!
I can't wait to see the full ABC interview. The clips I have seen so far show she has been prepped and told when she gets any question she does not know how to answer to either repeat her non answer she has already given or attack the interviewer.
What a disgrace. She is a national security threat even as a candidate. Imagine what our world will be like if McCain and she get elected. Heaven help us.

Ya, Linc was right. Right about Iraq and right about Palin. That's what makes the right angry. Now her comments about going to war with Russia... can there be any doubt? Obama should just stay with the facts. America went to war with Iraq on the false pretense that they attacked us. Linc said no to all of this. He was right then, and right now.
We are in a big mess here and in the world. If Obama keeps making dumb remarks about lip stick he is loosing my support. Sarah is a big coup for the extreme right. McCain said she sold the state's jet on EBay for a profit. No, Alaska hired an airline broker to sell the plan. John is loosing his mind, Sarah in the Oval Office would make us wish that George W was back there. That's the truth, and Linc said so. That's what make the right mad.

If more of our past and present elected officials said what they mean and mean what they said like Chafee and Obama this country would not have put itself so deep into financial debt and motivated its citizens to do to do likewise. It is appalling that among our country's biggest debt holders are countries like China and Russia that probably don't like us that much or only really like the fact that we have become a society of spenders. We need real change now... both in our own behavior and in our government's.

Look, I plan to vote for Obama. I'm not a looney progressive by any means, but I still feel uncomfortable with McCain-Palin. And, yet, the missing Linc's reference to Governor Palin as a "cocky whacko", I find vulgar and low-class. I can't imagine voting for Linc for anything! Look at the snappy put-down he got from the Obama campaign for his ignorant comment!

The wacko is Linc Chafee -. The only reason the man was ever elected to office was that his father - Senator John Chafee was a great man who was loved and respected and did a lot for the people of Rhode Island. Poor John who must be spinning in his grave at the the complete idiot his son turned out to be. How dare he attack a strong woman like Sarah Palin. The fact his she has more courage and ability than he ever had. He only got elected because people hoped he was like his dad. When they realized what a loser he was they kicked him out of office. As a Rhode Island woman I can assure you this man does not speak for our state and has insulted all women not just Sarah Palin - I guess it is all right for a woman to run for a high political office as long as she is more like a lackey of her party instead of strong and confident - oh yes only men can be confident women we call cocky wacko's!

Paul from Exeter - Thank You for describing Linc to a tee! Registered GOP - don't believe you are a registered voting Republican for 30 years and wouls support Obama - unless of course you think women have no place in politics.Nataniel - Chafee will never be our next Governor - maybe in your dreams!

Just when I thought it wasn't possible to be any more embarrassed about Linc Chafee, he manages to out do even himself. We all know he has certain personality quirks, however, he's starting to sound a lot like Joe Biden on the stump (in other words, he's a bumbling idiot). He isn't helping.
Linc has no credibility on this or pretty much any other substantive issue. He could have simply said, I've never met Gov. Palin, and would like to learn more about her -- and left it at that. I'm not sure how he thinks his comments would actually help Obama. I would hope that the Obama campaign -- for it's own sake -- would distance itself from him quickly. It doesn't need any more distractions, especially now. He's a liability and clearly unstable.
I think he's just afraid of Sarah Palin -- because she's more of a man than he is!

Chafee said nothing controversial. He has common sense. Watch the Palin interview (her only one!). It is terrifying. We live in a fascistic, 1984 twisted bizarro-land. No other country in the Western world would take this woman seriously. Americans need to develop critical thinking skills. It's very, very disturbing to think that the American people have learned NOTHING from the last eight years.

Mr. Chafee, your Dad was a great Senator & Patriot. He served his country well. A lot like Senator McCaine. What would your Dad think of your remarks?
Try having a little more class.

Linc Chaffee has always been confused about his politics. It is unforntunate that he was selected to followi in his father, the great John Chaffee's footsteps. Now when people think of Senator Chaffee and the great accomplishments he made, his love of this country and its system of government, his respect for the members of the government, there will always be the asterick of Linc Chaffee. Linc Chaffee, the poor little rich boy who inhertited his father;s position, but could not hold onto to it because he was like Charlie Brown, wishy-washy. He could not hold on to his Senatorial seat because he was so unpredictable and made decisions that were inconsistent with the direction that his constituents were going in. He lost it all because he opened his fat mouth, one too many times and we got tired of being the laughing stock of the Congress.
The ProJo should not even take up space in with anything this fortunate has-been says. Quite frankly, we don't give a damm.

What would one expect of a man who would still be shoeing horses and shoveling manure, if it wasn't for his family name and connections. This is someone who enjoys living on hundreds of acres of land, without the same tax liability as the rest of us. Yet with all that extra cash, can't be bothered to tip a local waitress after shoveling down his breakfast.

A cocky Wacko...Thats a bold statement...Guess you could say Linc is "A little Cocky"

It is a dangerous presentiment for Sarah Palin to potentially be a heartbeat from the presidency of the US.Any comment, by any person, couched in any terms, that draws attention to that fact is therefore appropriate on its face.

Whacko is an accurate description - type 'sarah palin pentecostal' into Google and have a look at a few - and reserve your ticket for Mars

The only comment I have is that I am so glad the word "former" is in front of this guy's title.

Whacko is an understatement. How about malignant narcissist? The complete lack of kindness and empathy towards animals ( mainly wolves )and the my way or the highway approach is just a symptom of that type. Not what this country needs.

Bravo. Linc, you read my mind. This woman needs to ride one of those fictional dinosaurs back to Alaska where they can all speak in tongues.

I am an African American and back in the days when Jesse Jackson was running for president I was insulted at the suggestion that I would vote for Jesse Jackson for president just because he was black, I mean Jesse Jackson is, was, and always will be a fraud, I would rather vote for a chartered me member of the KKK than him. It is sad that women are so desperate for their chance they would back a fake like Palin and even have the nerve to compare her to the "real deal", Hilary, who earned hers' coming up the rough side of the mountain, and prevailing against an onslaught for years from the mainstream media, and the psychotic far right wing of the Republican Party, while at the same time managing to raise a respected and powerful daughter. Women will just have to wait for her return, and you can bet she will be back and win, but please my sisters in faith do not settle for a paper champ when you can have the real deal. Back when Reagan took office the black community was concerned about his sensitivity, but I, a liberal, knew at the time he was the best thing for us, just as Republicans should now admit, Obama, not for all time, just for now, is the best thing for America at present

I think the time has come for a president such as Barrack Obama. Palin is a diaster. McCain is too old, I think that the country isn't ready for a female president with such extremist ideals.

McCain and Palin have so far bamboozled the American people into believing that somehow she is even remotely qualified to be at the helm of the most powerful office in the world. She may be cocky and brassy, but not informed, prepared or qualified in the least bit. If you have any doubts, just watch these tv interview answers, she is a bs'er not a serious servant of the people. It has become obvious that McCain was a mistake as Sarah's choice shows a willingness to feign good intentions in order to gain power. And she is certainly a good partner for him as she is also out to hoodwink her way into power. Well john, it now has gotten to the point where we can't wait either for you to introduce Sarah to Washington. You are not a conservative, and Sarah is not a real anything. she is a phony who will in the end be shown to be on inch tall and half-an-inch deep. Congratulations for ruining the GOP
