BRISTOL -- Travelers along the East Bay Bike Path on this gorgeous late-summer afternoon have something extra to catch their attention -- a visit from U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, former contender for the Democratic presidential nomination. At about 1:30 p.m., Clinton arrived for a fundraiser a home that sits only a few feet away from the bike path in Bristol. The fundraiser at the home that of Alan Hassenfeld, chairman of the board at Pawtucket-based Hasbro Inc., will benefit Clinton's political action committee. Traveling in a black SUV, Clinton, wearing sunglasses and a red outfit, waved to reporters gathered down the street, but didn't stop to talk. The visit from the former first lady has generated high security and the press is being kept at a distance, but the bike path passes right by the house and many bicyclists are stopping to see if they can catch a glimpse. (The police aren't letting the press on the bike path.) The bike riders can't get too close, though. The U.S. Secret Service, the Bristol Police and the Rhode Island State Police are guarding the house. A Coast Guard boat is patrolling the water nearby. Those attending the event include U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, U.S. Reps. James Langevin and Patrick Kennedy, all R.I. Democrats, and William Lynch, chairman of the Rhode Island Democratic Party. -- Reported by Cynthia Needham, Journal State House bureau CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil.
