JOHNSTON -- A local woman was arrested after an investigation found that she had tried to mislead officials at state Division of Motor Vehicles, the state police said today. Brenda Acciardo, 46, of 2842 Hartford Ave., altered the date on the form she presented to the registry last year to verify her payment of motor-vehicle excise taxes, according to state police Lt. LeRoy Rose. She changed the date on the old form from March 26, 2007, to Dec. 26, 2007, Rose said. Then, on June 2, Acciardo provided the fraudulent document to the registry as evidence that her most recent excise taxes were up to date, Rose said. Acciardo was arrested Thursday and charged with a misdemeanor count of giving a false document to an agent, employee or public officer, Rose said. If convicted, Acciardo could face up to a year in jail and up to $1,000 in fines. She was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Richard Finnegan and released on $1,000 personal recognizance. -- Journal staff writer Mark Reynolds |
