TIVERTON -- A Tiverton firefighter has died while trying to rescue a boater who had fallen overboard.

The firefighter was one of dozens of rescuers who went into the waters of Stafford Pond on Sunday evening to search for the missing boater.

WPRI-TV reports that the firefighter went into cardiac arrest during the search and was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

Chief Robert Lloyd says he's sad for the family of the firefighter, whose name was not immediately released.

The missing boater was not located and the search will resume Monday morning.
