The National Weather Service late today issued a hazardous weather outlook tonight for Rhode Island and elsewhere in New England.

But in a 5:30 p.m. advisory the weather service canceled a severe thunderstorm warning for much of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. This thunderstorm has weakened below severe levels," the notice says.

Some of the weather's effects are apparent this afternoon.

A Journal reporter on Veterans Memorial Parkway in East Providence this evening said the road had been flooded and traffic backed up from the Pawtucket intersection to the Route 195 exit.

Along that route, a couple of trees appeared to have been struck by lightning, with one split down the middle

The weather service has also issued an evening flood advisory for Bristol County in Rhode Island, eastern Kent County, northern Newport County, and southeastern Providence County, northeastern Washington County, and, in Massachusetts, west-central Bristol County.

Doppler radar, at 4:15 p.m., showed slow-moving thunderstorms that the weather service said were expected to produce up to two inches of rain by 6 p.m. Flooding was expected, particularly in the Warwick-to-East Providence corridor. Creeks and small streams could see water-levels rise.
