Superior Court Judge Judith C. Savage has rejected a Cranston School Committee lawsuit seeking some $4.5 million in additional education aid from the city of Cranston. Savage's blistering decision noted that the School Committee "blatantly failed to comply with numerous statutory prerequisites" to filing the lawsuit, known as a Caruolo action. The lawsuit, filed originally for $4.9 million in late May, claimed that the city had not provided the district with enough money to adequately run the schools for the fiscal year that ended June 30. As the legal battle played out in court, the city loaned the district some $4.1 million to get through the end of the fiscal year. The district will now have to pay that back. The School Committee, counting on a victory, assumed the city would be obligated to pony up some $4.5 million again for the current fiscal year, which began July 1. It could now face millions in mid-year cuts. -- Journal staff writer David Scharfenberg CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Vicious comments, personal attacks and profanity won't be published. When the school board starts hiring real teachers and putting real administrators in place then I say give them the 4.5 million. Until then they do not deserve it. I know cut the dead wood in the principals office at Bain that should get you started on cuts.
