Carcieri puts off order to unions to share health costs

PROVIDENCE -- Governor Carcieri is postponing his executive order that compels members of the largest state employees union and other unions to pay healthcare co-share increases, lawyers said this afternoon after meeting in chambers with a judge.

Following Carcieri's announcement yesterday, Council 94, the largest state employees union, vowed to seek an injunction in court. Today, the union filed a request for temporary restraining order.

The governor's administration agreed to postpone putting in place the order at least until next week so that Superior Court Judge Patricia Hurst can have time to consider union and administration arguments on the union's request.

The order followed what has been a mounting dispute with labor. A week earlier, Council 94, American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees -- a collective of 24 smaller unions representing more than 4,000 state employees -- easily rejected the proposed contract the governor's administration wanted.

The contract the administration supports is meant to save the state $10 million this year by putting off pay raises and raising employee health-care contributions.

A hearing before Hurst is slated for Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Who is steering the good ship Rhode Island? Can't the governor and is policy staff get it right just once? Blunder after blunder. Where is Steamboat Willie when you need him? As long as the current governor makes jobs his primary focus he will not be able to govern. He needs to focus on programs (products). Some where in the management literature it states hire good people, pay them well, and then grow the business. By pursuing his current path the governor has no hope of getting the workers behind his efforts. And he talks about his legacy?

Big Deal on the postponement. If anything if shortens the amount of time the state workers in the lower pay scales will have to deal with the implementation if the Governor prevails. Such a nice guy! The PR position he had to pull indicates how poorly his "staff" is doing while collecting their fat salaries. Next he will probably have the state police on the rooftops with machine guns again (a sad part of RI history) putting down the workers. He should realign the costs to the higher pay grades and be hitting the General Assembly for their NO-CO PAYS for Full Health Care. Pretty good gig for part-time workers.

I got it, perhaps Carcieri can have the union members/employees start paying themselves too . . .will that help erase all the corruption so that the hard working middle class can take the hit for and correct the mistakes of our so called leaders? Oh wait, it just dawned on me, perhaps instead of cutting the bene's for the union workers, why don't we reduce the salaries of the heads of state? Now there's a novel idea.
