NORTH KINGSTOWN -- The 18-month-old boy who died Friday after he fell into a backyard fish pond was identified by police today as Luke Metro of Exeter.

Accidental drowning was determined as his cause of death by the Office of the State Medical Examiners, police said.

The police have said the boy was under the care of babysitter Inez Neary, 37, at her Greenwood Road home. The police said Neary left the boy alone briefly. The boy opened a screen slider, crawled onto a deck, crossed the lawn and fell into a small, manmade fish pond.

Neary came upstairs, saw the boy was missing and woke her daughter.

The police said she searched the backyard and quickly found him face down in the pond. She pulled him onto the deck and called 911.

The call came at 9:40 a.m. Shortly after, Neary led Officer Thomas Connolly and Detective James Robinson to the baby, who lay motionless on the deck.

The two officers tried to revive the boy with CPR. Fire and rescue workers also tried, and then took the boy to the hospital.

What a terrible tragedy for both the parents and the babysitter. I feel awful for all involved. I hope this lets them know they are in the thoughts and prayers of so many.
