SOUTH KINGSTOWN -- A Narragansett man accused of murdering his long-time roommate was denied bail today by a judge who thought he might be at risk to flee.

Police have said Karl Ek, 65, called the police on Aug. 11 and told the dispatcher that he had blown his friend's "head off." Ek's friend, John M. Capuano, 46, was found dead in the house that the two shared at 69 Circuit Drive.

The defense argued today that Ek should be released, in part, because he owns a house, is a long-time Rhode Islander, and the house has been in his family for decades.

The prosecution argued Ek has no family in the state now, has traveled outside the country before and recently took out a mortgage on the house for which he owes about $650,000.

District Court Judge William Clifton said today he thought there was a high degree of flight risk and denied bail.

Ek remains at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston.

Ek was arrested without incident and appeared in District Court on Aug. 12. The murder charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

The case may be tried as a domestic-related murder, according to Michael Healey, spokesman for the Attorney General's Office, because of the sometimes romantic nature of the relationship between the two.

Neighbors have said Ek and Capuano had a tumultuous relationship, sometimes romantic, sometimes violent.
