This isn't much of an August. Today's temperature is set to reach just 76 degrees -- the average temperature is 82 degrees. On top of the chilly weather, we're in for rain, and maybe thunderstorms later this afternoon, complete with gusty winds, hail and lightning. Yesterday, things got particularly nasty, with to the National Weather Service, a storm in Dartmouth yesterday produced a waterspout along the Apponagansett River and the Apponagansett Bay. The waterspout -- similar to a tornado over water -- was about 25 yards wide and touched down at two spots between 11:35 a.m. and 11:40 p.m. It first touched down near the end of Day Street, near the River's shore, where it traveled for about 30 yards. Then the waterspout touched the surface of the Bay about 1 mile south of the Padanaram Bridge, traveling about 100 yards. No one was hurt, but the spout did overturn seven boats and cause some minor property damage, according to the Weather Service. Although waterspouts are most common in the tropics or subtropics, this is the second one reported in the area in the past month.
Tonight temperatures are set to hit about 60 degrees with partly cloudy skies and mild, west winds. Tomorrow looks more like summer, with clear skies, mild west winds and temperatures reaching about 83 degrees. To get an early look at the rest of the week's forecast, see projo.com's weather page. |
