Labor Day weekend is almost here -- and a few Rhode Island school districts are on the verge of weekend labors to try to reach contracts with teachers' unions. In Burrillville, a negotiation session was slated for 5 p.m. today. School began last week, and teachers reported. In Little Compton, a mediation session was scheduled for tomorrow. The contract expires Sunday. Teachers have voted to return to work for the start of school Tuesday if the contract is not settled. Scituate's negotiations were slated to resume at 1 p.m. at the middle school today, and schools Supt. Paul R. Lescault said negotiations would go as long as needed. Whether the two sides would meet over the Labor Day weekend would depend upon today's meeting. Teachers are due to go back to Scituate schools Tuesday and students on Wednesday. -- With Journal staff reports |
