Drivers should expect Route 95 north lane closings beginning at 11 tonight as the state Department of Transportation puts down new stripes at Exit 8 -- part of planned repair work on a damaged bridge.

The new stripes will shift lanes slightly to the left, the DOT said today. All lanes should reopen by 10 a.m. tomorrow.

The DOT said it recently discovered damage to girders caused by a large vehicle that apparently hit the bridge while passing underneath it on Route 2.

The lane shift will lower weight on the bridge while the DOT evaluates the damage and figures out a course of repairs. There is no exact repair timetable, and drivers can expect the lane shift to remain for several weeks.

Lanes will be narrowed and shoulders will be closed. The deceleration lane for Exit 8B will be shorter. The DOT urges motorists to slow down and take caution when driving on this section of Route 95.

The lane shift affects just Route 95 north.

The DOT also urged anyone with information about the crash that caused the damage to calle the State Police at (401) 444-1000.
