NORTH SMITHFIELD -- A funeral is planned for a 7-year-old Rhode Island girl who was killed by a flash flood at a New Hampshire campground last week.

Kaitlyn Ferra of North Smithfield died last Thursday when two brooks merged into a raging torrent and swept her family's SUV downstream in Ashland, N.H.

The Rev. Maurice Brindamour identified Ferra as the victim on Tuesday. He said a funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, the family's Woonsocket parish.

The burial will follow at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery in North Smithfield. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Holt Funeral Home in Woonsocket

The accident happened after a severe downpour. Witnesses say the girl's father jumped into the water, trying to save his family. His wife and 5-year-old son survived by clinging to a tree.

Ferra was born in Providence and was a student at North Smithfield Elementary School. She played soccer, and enjoyed swimming, and gymnastics, according to her obituary.

The family is asking contributions to be made to the Kaitlyn Ferra Memorial Fund, c/o Citizen's Bank.
