PROVIDENCE -- Eight members of the Governor's Hispanic Advisory Commission today explained their resignations, saying the governor did not respect their opinions nor solicit their advice.

In a standing-room only press conference at the State House, Vice Chairwoman Jennie Rosario said the resigning committee members were putting in a vote of no-confidence in Governor Carcieri because they could not work with him.

"It was a very, very difficult decision," she said. "There was a high, high level of trust" that was lost.

Through an interpreter, committee member Juan Garcia called Carcieri's executive order aimed at coping with illegal immigration "social genocide." He called the four committee members who did not resign the governor's "puppets."

The eight resigning members are Garcia, Rosario, Jaime Aguayo, Jorge F. Cardenas, Mario Mancebo, Elida Picard, Magdalena Picot and Bruno J. Sukys, who also resigned from the governor's 27-member panel on the Implementation of the Illegal Immigration Executive Order.

After signalling their intentions a few times in recent weeks, the eight had announced yesterday they would make their resignations formal today.

If Juan Garcia can't even speak English, he shouldn't have been on the panel to begin with.

Do we really need this commission? Are there commissions for any of the other ethnic groups in RI?

Bob said:

How about a commission for the real minority in Rhode Island - the honest hard working tax payer that is not getting bloated benefits or free handouts from unions or political connections or because of race or ethnicity?

I am tired of these latino whiners. If you don't like it here, go home! Illegal immigrants are just that - ILLEGAL! The Governor is doing what no other elected official has the spine to do. I applaud him for it.

Every time you turn around in this state, more corruption is visible. It now seems that there has been a longstanding tradition of looking the other way when illegal immigration occurs, and we can only surmise that lots of political campaign contributions went into the usual pockets. Now these crybabies are wailing that the laws that the state has been ignoring will actually be enforced. Wah, wah. Don't let the door slam you in the butt on the way out.

Does anyone wonder WHY these immigrants are so keen to come here? It is because of the CORRUPTION in their own countries. Only the thing is, once they get here they salt the system with the same kind of corruption they left behind. That's why the Italians left Italy in droves, because of the mobs and corruption in that country that they sought to flee. Many of that group came here illegally as well, "WithOut Papers" they would write on their admission sheets.

The reason that corruption runs SO rampant in RI is that the rest of us ordinary joes feel like saps after a while, when it becomes evident that everybody and his brother has some kind of angle going. If these 'commissioners' don't want to represent their ethnic group unless they can wangle their own angle, then hasta la vista, baby.

[BTW, other ethnic groups do have their own commissions, but they tend to be honorary, resume-plumping positions that don't even meet.]

This state needs a commission to take back all that the pandering buffoons in the state house are giving to people who don't earn or appreciate what they are given. We must vote against every incumbent in the next and every election.

Our Hispanic Community Also Needs an Apology for the Continue Abuses from Governmental Agencies.

The House of Representatives of the United States, few weeks ago emitted a historical excuse and without precedents towards our Brother Afro-American Community by the discrimination against them during many years and many decades and that still persist until today.

The efforts to remedy the evils of the past, the present and the future to date and welcome, especially to all those who have suffer this type of racial segregation.

Hopefully, some local legislator or Congress would also offer an apology to our Latin Community who has being suffering from discrimination, the abuse, the segregation, and mainly by the psychology abuse by the agency of Immigration (ICE), throughout this time.

Since discrimination is felt on a daily bases and has been reported throughout the media and has built a perception of criminals for the simple reason of people wanting to work and to have a better life for their families and help this great country to grow.

Hopefully the Senate, the Congress and the White House also consider some Resolution, To offer an apology as they did with our Afro-American Brothers, two weeks ago, since also our Latin Community has been Mistreating Humiliating and applying unjust laws to us, where the treatment given is not the appropriate one, when it comes to “REDADAS.”

We have faith that in the near future, our Hispanic Political Leaders who have being occupying a space in the Congress, the Senate and the White House considers seriously resolving the humiliations that has been created in our community a Psychological Trauma of Persecution, for the fact of being working and mainly to try to help boost the economy to this great nation.

We also know that this can be done with our community, the same way it has it has been done with other communities throughout the past decades and at this moment our Hispanic Community needs to hear an apology for the continue persecution and humiliation of our community so unfairly.

With our unity and respect as always. !Yes We Can!

I don't get it. An Hispanic commission, with the obvious intention of serving their lawless acts, are getting their underwear in a bunch because our Governor didn't consult them before writing and decreeing his Executive Order?

Can someone please explain to me why ignorance demands attention? Why is the Governor even placating these thankless people/

The real sad part is that they are proving to be a complete disservice to those legal immigrants who are proud that they came here the correct way.

I'm Portuguese and I would be frothing at the mouth if a Portuguese delegation did what these ignorant people have done to our state and to our Governor.

I don't often agree with Governor Cancer, but in this case he is right. Genocide? I don't think these people have a clue what that is. If they did, they would not use that word. They are FREE to leave Rhode Island for other places including returning to their native lands if they choose. See, they DO have freedom of choice. They can go wherever they want. However, if they want to participate and receive benefits, then they must be here legally. The illegal residents are taking away from legitimate registered aliens and Rhode Islanders when the budgets are so tight. Genocide? Hardly. Nobody is being executed, contained by barbed wire and electric fences, starved to death, gassed or anything close to Genocide. Perhaps they could look it up in a dictionary in any language. The definition should be very similar no matter what the language.

Julio;

maybe if you worked on solving the problems in Mexico, the unlimited corruption, the daily kidnappings etc etc maybe you wouldn't have to come here no??
I am all for us adopting the rules/laws that Mexico has with their illegal immigration issues?
If he would be so kind as to enlighten us to the Mexican stand on illegal immigration into their country??

Julio we are waiting...

wondering said:

Who really cares if they quit anyway. They never had any intention of "advising" or discussing anything. They joined to demand that nothing be done about illegal immigrants. Yes I said illegal, there is a difference!

R. Dambra said:

For to many years the flood gates have been left open to allow so many of these illegals into this country. they are multiplying and in a short time will be in control of our government. Don't kid yourself, this is there intent. In 2040,as reported in the news,we will be in the minority. The country will be theirs without fireing a bullet.

Bill said:

How many years, if not decades, has Juan Garcia been in the USA now? At least make an attempt to speak English! Humor us!

Genocide? I don't now how this goes in Spanish, but here's the English version: It is better to remain a fool and be silent, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

Ignorance is ignorance, regardless of ethnicity, and some of those folks speaking were the embodiment of it. I suppose one could chalk up a little of it to a language barrier, but I think we're just dealing with some leftist wingnuts here. The Hispanics in Rhode Island (the vast majority of those who are here legally) have GOT to have better representatives of their "community" than this! Good riddens!

PS Respect is earned; it's not an entitlement!

WOW! I hope the ProJo is getting this. Looks like most people don't care about this commission. Looks like most people are sick and tired of hearing from these whining "protect the illegal immigrant" groups

Juan...You want to be in this country. Learn to talk the talk.

As for Julio. My Irish ancestors were treated like dirt when they came here "Irish Need Not Apply" signs were prevalent. Can we get an apology too?

bill said:

illegal immigrants stop your whining and become legal.why did we ever need a commission of quitters anyway? maybe the governor would listen if you followed the laws of the united states.

Mrs. Julio Aragon,

As an American of African and Native American decent, you CANNOT compare the experiences of the Hispanic community with the experiences of my ancestors. As a decedent of slave, we are the only group of Americans that came to this great country against our will. We fought for and won our rights through the civil rights struggle against the injustices that were done to people who were in this country legally. Our struggle went by the books. We were and are here legally and fought for the rights that are due to the CITIZENS of this country. We did not break any laws. You cannot equally include illegal activity with legal activity. Your actions and the apparent condoning of such actions of those wanting to continue illegal activity is detrimental to a law abiding country.

As a leader, you should be telling those who are not here legally, that they should seek to do the right thing. Jesus said to sinners, SIN NO MORE. The leaders in the Hispanic community should live by the same examples as Jesus, give to Caesar what is Caesar, in this case, live by he laws of this land. To continue to bend and break the laws of this land, will break this country in the same way as the countries that illegal immigrants are leaving their country. You will be setting this country up to be the same as the lawless and/or nearly lawless countries of South American, which is why the illegals do not want to live in their own country. Don’t blame us, blame yourselves for condoning the illegal actions of others.

This is not a racial thing, it is about obeying and following the laws, and the consequences for not following the laws. Your arguments about the consequences for failing to follow the laws go on deaf ears. You want some validity in your arguments, show some leadership and communicate with your community to obey the law and properly fill out the paperwork.
