Burrillville's Shippee Bridge will be closed next month for repair work that the state Department of Transportation said will raise the span's weight limit from three tons to 10 tons. The closing is expected on Sept. 15, and work is expected to last about three months before the bridge reopens, the DOT said in a news release today. The bridge, which carries Sherman Farm Road -- Route 98 -- over the Nipmuk River in the Harrisville section, has had a three-ton weight limit since February. The limit was lowered after inspections and an analysis finished last winter found more deterioration to parts of the bridge. All traffic will follow a heavy-vehicle detour in place since February, the DOT statement said. -- projo.com staff writer Michael P. McKinney |
