The state Department of Transportation and several police departments will carry out an "intensive enforcement" of drunk-driving laws in South County and on Aquidneck Island Friday, the DOT announced today. A 10:30 a.m. news conference about the effort is tomorrow at the Park N' Ride, Routes 138 and 1A, North Kingstown. Enforcement will continue as part of a national driving-under-the-influence crackdown from Aug. 15 through Sept. 1. "Impaired driving is Rhode Island's deadliest crime," the DOT said. "Over half of the State's highway fatalities involve alcohol." Potential speakers at the news conference are Michael P. Lewis, the DOT director; James Ryan, deputy regional administrator at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; Col. Brendan P. Doherty, the state police superintendent; and, Gabrielle Abbate, executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Rhode Island. -- projo.com staff writer Michael P. What a joke. A 19 yr old was stopped in speed trap central (S Kingstown) arrested for dui, and the case was quietly dismissed. Give me a break. This happens constantly in RI. Ever go to court for a speeding ticket? You wait there for hours for going 10 over on rte 95, while lawyers hustle their drunk driving clients in and out in 10 minutes.
