WOONSOCKET -- A fire charred the front of a three-story residence at 261 Summer St. late today, spreading thick smoke across half the residential block, but neighbors said at least three people got out safely.

The stretch of Summer Street has been blocked off and a crowd of perhaps 100 onlookers gathered this evening.

At least six fire trucks from Woonsocket and Cumberland Hill departments converged on the area to attack the flames.

The cause of the fire was not yet known.

Members of the Binette family, who live next door, said the fire began a little before 4:45 p.m. today -- and say they saw flames shooting out of a first-floor window of the blue house at 261 Summer St. They said an 11-year-old boy on the first floor and two teenage girls on the second floor got out of the house before the fire escalated.

At about 6:30 p.m., firefighters were inside the building fighting the remaining flames. Outside, hoses were shooting water onto the building.
