Governor Carcieri today appointed Kenneth R. Walker, who's served 28 years on the Parole Board, to be the board's chairman, effective a week from tomorrow.

Walker replaces Lisa S. Holley.

Walker is a retired secondary education professor at Rhode Island College and an adjunct professor at Johnson and Wales Univeristy' s Graduate School of Education. He is also a retired basketball referee for the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and the NCAA.

Walker started on the Parole Board in 1980 and has been past chairman and most recently vice-chairman.

Walker's "commitment to youth and public service is commendable," Governor Carcieri said in a statement. "His presence on the Parole Board has provided consistency and continuity for more than 25 years, and I am confident he will continue to serve as chairperson honorably."

Walker received a bachelor's degree from Providence College in 1957 and a master's in education from Rhode Island College, where he worked as assistant director of Project Upward Bound, a program for economically and educationally disadvantaged youth. Walker received his education doctorate from Boston University.

Walker is past president of Big Brothers of Rhode Island, a member of the Teen Drug Court of the Rhode Island Family court, a member of the Board of Trustees of Salve Regina University, and a trustee at St. Mary's Academy Bay View.

Carcieri also thanked Holley for the "tireless commitment she has shown to the Parole Board. She has served with great integrity and I wish her well."

Ms. Holley served the board with distinction. She was conservative, but very fair. I will miss her. Dr. Walker is an excellent choice as successor. These are good people, and the State is fortunate to have their services.

It's about time.Dr.Walker should have been appointed years ago, rather than a Warwick police officer ,(Holley), who was a friend of Lincoln Almond.
