Bail hearing for man accused of murdering roommate

A Narragansett man is scheduled for a bail hearing today in the murder of his long-time roommate.

Police say 65-year-old Karl Ek shot and killed John M. Capuano, 46, then called police to tell them what he'd allegedly done.

The two men had lived together for decades, according to neighbors, but their relationship was not always a pleasant one. In 2004, for instance, police said a drunken Capuano threatened Ek with a loaded M-11 9mm machine gun. Capuano was placed on probation.

On Aug. 11 at about 10 p.m., Narragansett police said Ek called and said he'd just blown his friend's head off. When firefighters arrived at the house, at 69 Circuit Drive, they found Capuano bleeding and slumped over a computer. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ek faces charges of murder and discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence; each charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, according to Michael Healey, a spokesman for the attorney general's office, which is working with Narragansett police in the investigation.

Healey said the case might be tried as a domestic-related murder, given the domestic-assault charge against Capuano in the 2004 incident and what was, at times, a romantic relationship between Ek and Capuano.
