Department of Environmental Management Director W. Michael Sullivan said that the pond at the World War II Memorial Park opened at noon today with a DEM staffer as acting lifeguard. The pond had been closed since Saturday, when 47-year-old Sidney Jones drowned while out swimming with his children. There have not been lifeguards at the man-made pond all summer. Sullivan said he has not been able to find someone to work in Woonsocket, "even though we've offered to pay some of the highest lifeguard rates of anywhere in the state." Today a DEM staffer is working as the pond's lifeguard; she'll work a 7-day stretch, if necessary, Sullivan said. And if no one is hired for the position -- which is advertised on the DEM Web site as paying $9.50 and $11/hr. -- Sullivan said he will reassign other employees. I could be wrong but, Dosnt the Woonsocket Pond also act as the official city toilet

What is discriminatory Mayor Menard, is the fact that all of the taxpayers in the Stateof Rhode Island must fund this beach when the predominate users of this swimming hole are Woonsocket residents. It is time that this swimming hole becomes a "city" beach, like Spring Lake and others throughout the state.
It is time the taxpayers stop supporting somthing that is not enjoyed by a good majority of the population!

Can anyone SHUT Susan Menard's BIG MOUTH? Anyone, anywhere?? Wasn't she supposed to be resigning due to highly questionable motorcycle contracts she awarded to a relative??
Do the good people of Woonsocket realize that this woman's BIG MOUTH makes your city a laughing stock?? Anytime there's a scandal, political dirty tricks, questionable deals, outrageous allegations, you name it ... Susan Menard is hip-deep in the middle of it. She's starting to make Cianci look like a choir-boy ...
Three cheers to DEM Director Sullivan for calling Big Mouth's bluff by threatening to plug the plug and drain all the water out of the pond. Better yet, give Woonsocket the damned pond and Menard can hire all her relatives at $50/hour to act as lifeguards!!
