PROVIDENCE -- The state Board of Elections voted unanimously this morning to postpone any change in the operation of provisional ballots until the November election. The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union had challenged a proposed rule that it says would discount the votes of people who show up at the wrong polling place on Election Day. The ACLU says that under the proposal, people who try to cast a ballot at the wrong polling place would not have any of their votes counted. Currently, people showing up at the wrong precinct will have only their votes for federal office counted. The ACLU argued there was no reason to ignore a voter's ballot just because a person goes to the wrong polling place. The vote should not be counted for local offices, as the voter is not a member of that district. The federal vote should count, but no other. Why should their vote count for someone who does not even represent them? I can see if none of their votes would be counted, but the most important, federal, would be. No-one is stopping the voter to go to their correct precint.
