PROVIDENCE -- Jim Hummel, an ABC 6 reporter for the past 13 years who is known for the "You Paid for It" investigative segments, turned in his resignation to the station this morning.

Hummel said that the station had wanted him to renew his contract, but he told his manager he was "just not comfortable with the direction that the station is going."

The former Providence Journal reporter's departure from the station comes after ABC 6 came under new ownership last October.

Hummel said he had made it clear he wanted to see what direction the new ownership took the news programs and that he had extended his old contract for a time but was no longer under contract when he resigned.

"I've got to tell you, this decision has been 10 months in the making," Hummel said.

His resignation is effective immediately, Hummel said.

His final report for the station, a "You Paid for it" segment about a historic Newport building that now seems to have problems after being restored with taxpayer dollars, aired first at 11 last night.

Hummel said he felt his leaving was on amicable terms.

But Hummel said he has become "increasingly disturbed by what's going on the air because there is increasing pressure to sensationalize" in order, he believes, to achieve higher ratings.

Stephen Doerr, vice president and general manager at ABC 6, said the station "will have an investigative reporter." Whether it will be a new hire or one of the current reporters remains to be seen.

Doerr had worked with Hummel for the last several months, since the station changed ownership, and called him "a terrific reporter." He'd met with Hummel for coffee this morning and tried to persuade him to stay. But Hummel was firm that the station was going in a different direction than he wanted. "Jim is a self-admittedly old-school guy," Doerr said.

The parting was not acrimonious.

Hummel said some of his television reporting he's been most proud of included the North Kingstown school administration spending restricted federal special education money on food and drinks for an administrative retreat and coverage of former Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr.

"I would love to continue to be a reporter in this market," he said. "I think I've got a few good years left. But I don't have anything lined up right now."

Hummel went from the Journal, which he joined in 1982, to ABC 6 in 1995.

Good for him! I think he's right about the TV station. They're also losing the professionalism they once had. It's not unusual to be listening to a report and hear them refer to the subject of the story as "The guy..." like it's a joke. And the disturbing part is that the anchors delivering the report don't seem 100% comfortable doing so in that style.

I wish Jim well – he's one of the nice guys.

He was the only good thing on ABC 6 news. I could see him moderating news makers on 12, if he chooses to stay local.

Good riddance, I say. Hummel's brand of sensationalistic "journalism" is exactly what is wrong with much of the media today. I'm surprised that he says he is leaving due to "increasing pressure to sensationalize", because sensationalism is precisely what Hummel does!

Please. Just give me the fact and leave the spin out of it.

Good for him!!! Channel 6 has become trashy, tabloid TV. Better to get out now before his professional reputation is ruined. He has more class than what the newstation is projecting lately. Good Luck to him.

Sad to see him go, I hope he ends up at another RI station.

To be fair, I have to say I never liked Jim Hummel, not the person...just his reports. I found them boring. That being said, I wish him well. Ch. 6 is so much better than it used to be. I actually was a 10 viewer until 6 got new people. I started watching out of curiousity and now the other stations put me to sleep. i hope they don't let this affect what they are doing. I like the attitude.

ABC6 too sensational for Hummel? He was the worst yellow journalist I've ever encountered. I had expected a change of the guard to let him go last year, especially after his shoving incident. I'd bet a donut he was allowed to resign rather than be fired.

Jim said:

Good for him, Steve Doerr is destroying the station.

Lori said:

Good bye and thank goodness Jim! My parents were the only ones who liked him and that was before they died. Not trashing him, he was a good journalist, but not tv. Newspaper was more his thing.

Sal said:

I saw a story about him on channel 6. it seems like they said all good things, I can't believe he would trash them. Says a lot about the kind of guy Jim is. Sorry Jim, you are in the wrong this time.

Gino said:

Beth, what is so bad about saying "guy"? I kind of think the plain talk is refreshing. The big news stations like CNN and FOX do it all the time. It's about time local news follows suit. Now I can finally hear about what is going on in Providence but without all the official BS. I started watching CNN because I thought 10 was boring and 12 too flashy and 6 was horrible. now, i like 6! For the first time in over a decade the station is fun to watch. I wish Jim well. I always liked his articles.

For Hummel to say he is "increasingly disturbed by what's going on the air because there is increasing pressure to sensationalize" is like the trout calling the salmon all wet! He is blind to the fact that all his reports were to be sensationalized to appeal to particular viewers. He is not and never will be a honest, serious reporter. He is and always will be a hack reporter!

ABC6 News: First they toss Walter Cryan, then Melissa Mahan. Hummel leaving is the last straw, I'll never watch again.

Ed said:

I for one think the recent changes at 6 have been a huge improvement. If Hummels's not happy with the direction of station, then good riddens to him. The fact that he had to take a shot at the station by revealing his displeasure with the new direction, was classless. He could have just left it as a "time for a change", or "my contract was up", etc.

I finally feel that ABC 6 takes news seriously and has a true commitment to the process - not just going through the motions as before. Keep it up. I love the new direction.

He quit. Anyone with any standards would. ABC6 now predicts the news, misreports the news, misrepresents the news, manufactures the news, etc. etc. They'll do live shot after live shot in their own parking lot fer crying out loud. They'll do anything for ratings short of (barely) a striptease. And if the "guys" running the show tell the on air folks to do that, they will.
The only thing they won't do is accurately report the news.

Swamper said:

They canned Walter Cryan? I thought he just finally retired or something. Huh. Double Huh.

Mark said:

Sad to see Jim go, while I found some of his reports a little over the top he sure did get to the bottom of the issues. I agree with most of the people that have written in..channel 6 has become very sensational. The news at 4:00 with Paul is like watching Fox News Channel..very painful.

Give Hummel a break. Old-school journalism is disappearing and we're all poorer for it. Someday soon, you'll all be wishing for someone who could properly check out what appears to be a government boondoggle or a scam or an inept brige inspector and they'll all be gone because no one cared enough.

Do you have the guts or the time to do the clean-up that needs to be done? Do you have the willpower or expertise to challenge the establishments?
I sincerely doubt it.

Carlos R. said:

"Old-school" if I wanted "old-school" I'd open up the newspaper and read. When I turn on television I want entertainment and something nice to look at. That's not Hummel.

John said:

Thank goodness Jim Hummel no longer works at 6! Now, I can start watching again!! The sight of him made me sick--the way he fabricated stories and acted high and mighty. Ch.6 should have fired him a long time ago.

ExRhody said:

Good luck, Jim. Seems like it was all downhill from the time they started "Buddy TV."

Geoffrey Rinn said:

Good Luck Jim. In my time working for the East Greenwich Police, and dealing withe the media, you by far provided an example of ethical journalism with a great sense of humor. I know you'll be successful in future endeavors, and know your personality will never change. Keep "Opie and the Flamingos"!!
