PROVIDENCE -- A 2-year-old boy has died after falling from a third-floor window in the Silver Lake section of Providence. The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. at a three-family house at 218 Sterling Ave. The child, whose name has not been released, landed on a cement walkway outside the home. The boy was unconscious and rushed to Hasbro Children's Hospital. The police said he died shortly after midnight today. The child's father told reporters he had disciplined the boy and his older sister for playing near the window. The father said his son apparently went to the window when he wasn't looking and fell. -- The Associated Press with Journal reports. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. this happens much to often.... landlords and tenants should purchase relatively inexpensive window guards to prevent these devastating injuries and deaths... these ARE preventable....

Most windows now open from the top as well as the bottom. I open my windows from the top so this type of incident is impossible for my children... Simple solution for parents with common sense. If the father had just disciplined his children for playing next to the open window, why on earth would he leave it open after that????!!!!!!

This is preventable by opening the window from the top. I have a 3 year old and a 5 year old and all windows in my house are opened from the top so the kids can't reach the open part but I still get the fresh air. My heart goes out to the family.

I agree with the window guards, if it were my children, I wouldn't wait for the landlord to protect them, I would do it myself, before I even had a child in the apartment. These accidents are just too common to ignore safety where your child is concerned. Hot weather means open windows. You'd put a bed rail on a bunk bed, why not a window guard?

This is a terrible thing that happened it is called an accident. Many people say they would do this and they wouldn't do that but you never know. Sometimes it is a matter of seconds things happen. Stories like this maybe will prevent the next child from losing his/her life. And don’t forget most of these apartments people are renting do not have new windows in them. If you are a landlord maybe you can make sure that all your apartments are equipped with window guards this is a start.

We’ve heard these kinds of stories too many times! Can't people learn from mistakes of others? IF YOU LIVE ON THE 2ND FLOOR OR ABOVE OF A MULTY FAMILY HOME AND YOU HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN AT HOME; DON'T LEAVE THE WINDOWS OPEN OR GET A GUARD! These tragedies are senseless. It seems like every summer we have to hear these stories.

I think it is horrible that there is o many comment condeming the parents of this boy. They are experiencing the worse possible pain imaginable and you can't show any compassion? Pray for the family and send them your STRENGTH not your ANGER!!!!!!!

It was not an accident, it was negligence on the parents' part, period. The "Dad" said the child had been playing near the window earlier, and yet he still fell later. How do you not watch a 2 year old ALL THE TIME? The parents should be prosecuted for neglect.
