PROVIDENCE -- One suspected bank robber is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and another is in custody after a robbery at the Bank of America in the city's Washington Park neighborhood late this morning. Two officers were shot at during the subsequent police chase, according to Deputy Chief Paul J. Kennedy, but the police did not return fire. The chase proceeded to the vicinity of Prairie Avenue and Chester Street at which time the police say one of the suspects turned a weapon on himself and fatally shot himself. Neither of the officers was hit, and no one else was injured aside from the suspect. -- projo.com staff writer Brandie M. Jefferson, with reports from Journal staff writer Gregory Smith The police were called to the bank, on Broad Street, at 11:15 this morning. Around the same time, someone driving on Prairie Avenue stopped patrolman George Duarte, and pointed out a van, saying the occupants had just robbed the bank. Duarte broadcast a description and soon after, Patrolwoman Amy Bibeault spotted it near Potter and Prairie Avenues. She called for backup and followed the van into a driveway on Prairie Avenue. Both Bibeault and the driver of the van opened their doors and stepped out of their vehicles. The driver of the van turned and fired twice at Bibeault. The bullets hit the windshield and the front tire of her cruiser. At this point, according to Kennedy, the van's passenger got out, and the two start running through yards. One of the suspects encountered Sgt. Peter Costello pulling up in his cruiser on Chester Avenue. The suspect fired two or three shots but did not hit Costello. The suspect then ran into another yard where he was confronted, at gunpoint, by Det. David Moscarelli. At this point, Kennedy said, the suspect took the barrel of his handgun in his mouth. Moscarelli yelled three times: "Don't do it!" The suspect pulled the trigger. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, police followed a trail of money to a multifamily house on Public Street. They banged on the door, Kennedy said, and after some time, were let into the house, where they arrested the second suspect. He is being questioned by the police. A woman who was in the house on Public Street is also at the station for questioning; she is not currently facing charges. Kennedy said police do not know exactly how much money was stolen, but that some of the money has been recovered. Police have not released the names of either of the suspects, but say they are both "known to police," and believed to be Providence residents. CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. I must commend the Providence Police in this matter - I was in the vicinity while all this was transpiring - it is a wonder no one was hurt - it was pouring and seemed as if we were in the middle of a hurricane - but the police used good judgement and no one was hurt.
