An out-of-state health industry advisory group will work with a Pawtucket attorney overseeing the troubled Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket.

Superior Court Associate Justice Michael A. Silverstein today appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP of Albany, N.Y., to work with attorney Jonathan N. Savage, who has been acting as special master of the hospital since June.

The company will help Savage determine the state of Landmark's operations, and will look at whether the hospital has taken the actions recommended by PricewaterhouseCoopers in a May 2007 management consultant report.

Landmark petitioned the court late last month to clear the way for a potential merger with another hospital. The hospital has been losing money for years and at the end of the last fiscal year was $7.2 million in the hole.

PricewaterhouseCoopers will also help the company look for other ways to improve or advise in any "affiliation or merger transaction that Landmark Medical Center may enter into," according to a statement released today by the Rhode Island Judiciary.

Silverstein chose PricewaterhouseCoopers and five additional candidates from a list of 27. He then worked with David Gifford, director of the state Department of Health, and Savage, to choose a consultant.
