Yesterday, all 128 monitored beaches in the state were open. But with every inch of rain that fell, the likelihood grew slimmer that they would all remain open. Because of the rain, the state's Department of Health recommended closing the City Park Beach, Gorton Pond Beach and Oakland Beach, all in Warwick. And the results of previous water tests show high bacteria counts at Easton's Beach in Newport and Third Beach in Middletown; they are closed as well. Heavy rains lead to runoff that carries fertilizers, sewage and other contaminants into the water; and high levels of the bacteria Enterococci suggest the possible presence of sewage in the water. Beaches open and close regularly -- check the State Department of Health's Beach Monitoring Web site, or call the beach hotline at 222-2751 to see if your beach of choice is open. -- projo.com staff writer Brandie M.
