9 R.I. beaches closed after heavy rain

The sun is shining and the temperature is rising -- and it's the first day in a while that sunseekers might actually consider going to the beach.

Unfortunately, the heavy rains have washed all types of unpleasantries into the water, prompting the Health Department to close a number of beaches yesterday. And today, three more are added to the list.

Atlantic Beach in Middletown, Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett and Warren Town Beach in Warren have shown elevated levels of Enterococci -- bacteria that suggests sewage contamination.

City Park Beach, Conimicut Point Beach, Gorton Pond Beach and Oakland Beach in Warwick; Easton's Beach in Newport; and Third Beach in Middletown all remain closed as well.

And in general, people shouldn't swim in any water that's within 200 feet of a storm drain.

Beaches open and close frequently; to find out if your spot of choice is open, visit the Health Department's beach monitoring Web site, or call 222-2751.
