WASHINGTON -- With a blast at ``the failed policies of President Bush,’’ and a tribute to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s ``bond with the people of Rhode Island’’ Sen. Jack Reed pledged his support to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama today, calling him ``a leader of tremendous intellect and promise.’’ Reed thus joined the tide of uncommitted ``superdelegates’’ to this summer’s Democratic National Convention who have moved to endorse Obama, the freshman senator from Illinois, since he claimed a presidential nominating majority on Tuesday after a difficult struggle with Clinton, the former First Lady and Senate colleague from New York. "Senator Obama began this race as a leader of tremendous intellect and promise, and now, after a long and hard-fought race, he is the Democratic nominee,’’ Reed said in a statement he issued late this morning. ``Senator Obama will have my full and unwavering support,’’ Reed said. Reed, who has explained that he stayed on the fence in part because the Democratic campaign featured several valued Senate colleagues, said the party was blessed with ``great candidates’’ who ``showed all the passion, integrity, and diversity of this nation.’’ He singled out Clinton for praise as ``a fighter who cares deeply about the issues and the American people.’’ He added: ``She will and must be a significant part of our effort to make America’s future better.’’ Reed said Obama ``has fully earned the right to carry’’ his campaign message of ``change and hope.’’ Now, said the Rhode Island Democrat, ``it is time to come together’’ to reverse Mr. Bush’s ``misguided domestic and international policies.’’ -- John Mulligan of the Journal Washington Bureau CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. RHODE ISLAND VOTED FOR HILLARY---WHY DID YOU HAVE TO BE THE FIRST TO ENDORSE THE MAN WHO WAS SELECTED AND NOT ELECTED. MY VOTE FOR YOU IN THE FUTURE IS QUESTIONABLE. YOU HAVE BETRAYED OUR VOTES IN R.I.--SHAMEON YOU.

I agree with the above poster. Obama was selected and not elected by the people. Why did Reed not endorse Hillary a long time ago? As usual Reed really went out on a limb here. I voted for Hillary and no matter what I will NOT vote for Obama. He will make this country worse off than Jimmy Carter did. He calls McCain Bush the 3rd, well he will be Carter the 2nd. No way will he be elected president or have his hateful wife the first lady!

I DESPISE PEOPLE WHO TYPE IN ALL CAPS. You do know that Obama is the better candidate? Rhode Island, like Hillary Clinton, is not a state that is a vehicle for change. Electing Clinton would not change ANYTHING for America.
Shame on Reed? that's a bit harsh. Take a look in the mirror and look at who you voted for. Reed hasn't betrayed anything and been probably our only upstanding, longstanding politician.
SHAME ON YOU FOR BEING SO NEGATIVE!

I must have missed an awful lots of "news" about the presidential candidates and about Senator Reed. How is Reed the "first" to endorse Obama? Doesn't the article tell you people why Reed waited to make an endorsement? And what did Mrs. Obama do to make her so hateful??
And why despise people for the lack of understanding as to how to communicate civilly vis a vis ALL CAPS?
Imagine for one day having every single thing you do - from the clothes you wear and your haircut - and every single thing you say - from "Pass the Cheerios" without saying please, to "don't badmouth my husband in the national press" - being quoted, misquoted, screwed up and twisted. And then imagine having to get up day after day and try to prove to the world that you are the leader that people trust?
These people are brave, hardworking, and I think deserve much more credit all around than you are giving them.
Finally, Jack Reed is a treasure for the State of Rhode Island.

Craaanston Guy,
Why would anyone with an iota of self respect identify themselves as being from Craaaanston? You chide people for being negative, and in the same breath claim to despise people who type in caps. Typical Craaanston logic. As to Reed, this guy has the spine of a jellyfish. That is, for you folks who live in Craaaanston, none whatsoever. The puny little Senator sat on the fence hoping all along he would never have to make a decision. And he didn't once Obamination won. And he also needed a stepladder to get atop that fence, due to his meager stature, both figuratively, and literally.

"...worse off than Jimmy Carter did." OK, that was a while ago and I admit that I haven't looked through any history books to refresh my memory, but I seem to remember a Republican senate and house that fought Carter tooth and nail over every little thing. That piece of history was bi-partisan politics at its best. However, no one could leave this country any worse than the current administration, (he even out did his father). And not for nothing, but Bush has to go down as one of the dumbest presidents in recent history, and I would bet for all time. It can only get better starting next winter no matter who is elected.

Ummmmm . . .aren't some of these comments viicious and personal attacks?

Yes, worse than Carter. Obama is so far left like Carter. He is too liberal like Carter. I am not the only person who sees the comparison between the two. This comparison is brought up almost nightly by various political analysts and pundits. Obama is a phony. If you can't see that everything he does is for political gain than you are drinking too much Obama koolade. He will destroy this country even more than Bush. He has no experience and his judgement of character based on the people that he has befriended such as Reverand Wright, Bill Ayres, Tony Reznick, and Father Pfleger, makes me shudder to think about his judgement. America wake up before it is too late!

Heecok,
you say Sen Reed has the spine of a jellyfish??? As a war vet in the military I have nothing but respect for Sen Reed and all he has done for the troops in RI. What have you done??? How is your spine???

Thank you Senator Reed. You stayed uncommitted until the end, and now that Obama is the nominee you have thrown your full (and admirable) support behind him. Smart move.
All the hateful lies on this comment board sound like right-wing talking points. Then again... I find that many people who comment on ProJo's articles can hardly use proper grammar, never mind defend their positions for or against the candidates without spouting off nonsense such as Obama being a muslim (he's not), or refusing to put his hand over his heart for the pledge (He does), or that his wife is a racist (she isn't).
Fellow Rhode Islanders... you're scary sometimes.

Why would you bash people from Cranston? or any municipaties going through times, in this tough state?
This is a blog, Rhode Islander's don't blog like this, everyone essentially falls under another pseudoname and likes to spout off anonymously.
Some people actually write intelligent stuff on here. And for the record, Reed, Chafee, Avedisian and yes even Whitehouse at times have been instrumental in for change in Rhode Island, making at least baby steps in our incredibily top-heavy federal government
You can't really make solid positions on this. Just say what you mean or feel at the time, I guess.
I mean, check their track records, check their archives and statements. They speak for themselves and mean what they say. Do you want my dissertation?
I regret from posting on this under a different name.

As to "selected not elected," Obama won the pledged delegates and the popular vote (despite Clinton's lies about the latter.)
Clinton lost because she ran an inept campaign which she drove into $30 million in debt. Yeah, that's really someone I want running the national budget.
She also neglected to pay the health care insurance premiums for her employees. Is that someone you want running US health care?
As to friends, Clinton's buddy Peter Paul's trial is coming up, Bill takes millions from foreign politicians and corporations, and Hillary's religious adviser Doug Coe is a certified nutcase.
Oh, yes, and Bill pardoned two members of the Weather Underground in that mass of questionable pardons just as he left office. You know, the pardons Hillary's brother took money for arranging. Kind of makes Obama getting a $200 donation from Bill Ayers, who was never convicted of anything, look pretty puny, doesn't it.

Heeock, what the hell kind of name is that? Why would you say that about people from Cranston. People from the city, as far as those I know, have a lot of pride in their town. Maybe not where YOU come from!
You're incorrect about Reed having the spine of a jellyfish. Any veteran should be able to tell you that. Get your facts straight.
I wish I never posted on this. Blogging gets to be mindless because it attracts mindless people sometimes. Other times, some people say some really intelligent things on here.
