Groups protest immigration raids in Newport, Middletown

NEWPORT -- Representatives from about a half-dozen groups today protested immigration raids carried out in Newport and Middletown on Wednesday and Thursday.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that 42 immigration fugitives and violators were arrested during a raid carried out by members of ICE's Rhode Island Fugutive Operations Team.

Immigrant advocacy group members stood on the Newport Colony House steps in Washington Square and held a noon news conference.

Rev. Raymond Tetrault, pastor of St. Teresa Church in Providence's Olneyville section, said a "cessation" of deportations should be called for until Congress passes immigration reform.

He said immigrants are coming to the country to work and are supporting the economy.

Cease deportations until we get comprehensive reform?! Why stop doing the ONLY thing the government is doing right?

These La Raza-supported groups are a joke.

Hey - I got an idea! Let's all go out today and break some laws and see if the Church will come to our defense! What laws should we break? Should we steal? Should we rob? How about speed through city streets? Not pay taxes? Perhaps take 10 feet of my neighbor's property? Come on people! According to these "groups" - let's all go out and flout the laws because there's nothing more American then breaking laws right? Well aside from not speaking english and demanding laws be revoked for your own lawbreaking benefit.

"Contributing to the economy" is the exact OPPOSITE of standing on a sidewalk during business hours protesting anything, much less ICE raids.

Chances are pretty good the protesters themselves are illegal. Check their ID.

I agree, Kevin. I can understand the protests if they arrested LEGAL immigrants. But, c'mon people, they arrested ILLEGAL immigrants who are breaking our laws. What don't these groups understand about BREAKING LAWS????? I'm sure those groups want all criminals released. . .

American people doesnt know nothing about immigrants, some of than pay more taxes than the citizens, some of then dont drink,go to church, doest speak english but like to work very hard, dont take advantage of disable benefits, their kids are good learning in the school, follow rules and respect others, their pay cash for groceries, cars, stuff in stores, medicines, and hospitals bills, some of than are a family example and have a lot to teach American community, some of then are volunteer in a lot of natural disaster and nurse home but the good things doesnt show
on tv and news paper and if a legalization law was made they have the cash to pay the process and help the country economy.
