Caroly Shumway, director of conservation science for The Nature Conservancy's Providence office, drops some of the 20,000 pounds of shellfish into Ninigret Pond today as the first step in a new shellfish and eelgrass restoration effort in South County's salt ponds. The "spawner sanctuary" will serve as a breeding ground for the shellfish. The clams filter the water to feed, cleaning the water in which they live which, in turn, should improve the water quality of the pond.
